Technological Advancement for Efficiency Enhancement of Biodiesel and Residual Glycerol Refining: A Mini Review

Biodiesel or known as fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), is a diesel fuel substitute derived from the transesterification reaction of triglycerides with alcohol in presence suitable catalyst. The demand for biodiesel increasing due to environmental and health awareness, well diminishing energy security. However, impurities will affect engine performance by corroding tubes damaging injectors. Common methods purification include water washing, dry washing membrane separation. This mini review compares technological advancement efficient enhancement glycerol refining between wet (activated compound, biomass-based adsorbents silica-based adsorbents), ion exchange separation technology. percentage residues, soap, catalyst crude was compared reflect resulting purity variation. advantages disadvantages each method were also discussed.
